Overview

The Department of Composition and Music Theory explores contemporary forms of instrumental and electroacoustic composition and explores scholarly, artistic, and pedagogical approaches to music and styles of all periods. Teaching and music education at the highest level are offered to students of all majors.

About

The department of composition is closely linked to the performance practice of New Music through close cooperation with the Institute for New Music and the international master's program in New Music.

In the area of music theory, the department offers, in addition to the professionalization in music theory provided for in all music degree programs, the possibility of in-depth study and specialization in the bachelor's and master's programs in music theory as well as in the focus on music theory/aural training in the IGP program (acquisition of the supplementary teaching qualification in music theory/aural training for Austrian music schools).

Sarah Nemtsov receives the Heidelberger Künstlerinnenpreis 2025

Sarah Nemtsov, renowned composer and university professor of composition at the Mozarteum University, will receive the Heidelberger Künstlerinnenpreis 2025 for her outstanding contributions to contemporary music. The prize, which has been endowed with 10,000 euros since 2025, is one of the most important cultural prizes in Germany and is the only prize in the world to be awarded exclusively to female composers.

Ö1 Talent Exchange: Composition Prize 2024/25 (german page)

The Ö1 Talentebörse Composition Prize worth 10,000 euros is awarded every two years by Ö1 and the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB) and will be awarded for the ninth time in 2024/2025. The composition prize is a composition commission for a chamber music work, which may also include electronics.

ARCO as guest in Marseille

On July 16, this year's edition of the top-class French-Austrian Academy of Composition came to a successful close in Marseille with four concerts. For the first time, the prize winners of the International Mozart Competition were invited to Marseille and performed in the concerts.

Long night of research

Off to the most exciting night of the year. At the Long Night of Research on 24 May 2024, current projects, the latest findings and technologies will be presented in an understandable and vivid way at around 100 stations in the city of Salzburg and Puch-Urstein - live and with free admission.
