IMAGINE COMMUNITY

Installation and discussion with works by Stefan Berger, Marie Gruber, Magdalena Heller, Vera Kern and Lisa-Marie Sereinig

Imagine Community” explores the notion of ‘community’ through engagement. How do we experience the importance and the impact of local communities and organizations on contemporary societies and cultures, and how can we imagine its new forms? The approaches range from reflecting on temporary communities and urban neighborhoods, family businesses to the Afghan community in Austria. To put their exploration in global and historical context the participants got in touch with NY-based artists and groups from various cultural backgrounds. These dialogues include the singer and poet Felice Rosser, Ivy Arce, member of the activist groups ActUp and Rise and Resist, Jack Waters, co-founder of ‘Le Petit Versaille Gardens’, artist Caroline Woolard, the Lower East Side Girls Club and Nanzy Azara, artist and founding member of the Feminist Art Institute.

A project by students of the visual arts and education program at the University Mozarteum Salzburg, Austria (www.kunstwerk.moz.ac.at) initiated by Gregor Neuerer. The students will present a spatial setting specifically conceived for the gallery where collected experiences and their visibilities of communities coexist, interact and will be discussed. The project is generously supported by the City Council of Salzburg and the University Mozarteum Salzburg.
